Laravel Backend Engineer

Build the systems behind the platform — APIs, M-Pesa integrations, AI insight pipelines, and the data model that powers it all.

About the role

Everything the app does is powered by our Laravel backend: the APIs, the M-Pesa integrations, the AI insight pipelines, and the data model that ties it together. As our backend engineer, you will design and build these systems with a care for security and correctness that financial software demands. You will work directly with the founders and own meaningful parts of the platform from day one.

What you'll do

  • Design and build APIs that power the mobile app and advisor tools.
  • Work on M-Pesa integrations and the pipelines that turn transactions into insights.
  • Model and evolve the data layer in PostgreSQL with an eye on performance.
  • Build and maintain background jobs, queues, and scheduled work reliably.
  • Write secure, well-tested code and help raise the engineering bar across the team.

What we're looking for

  • Strong commercial experience with Laravel and modern PHP.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL.
  • Comfort with queues, background jobs, and service-oriented architecture.
  • A security-first mindset and care for testing financial logic properly.
  • Ability to work independently and ship in a small, fast-moving team.

Nice to have

  • Experience with M-Pesa Daraja or other payment integrations.
  • Familiarity with Filament, Sanctum, or Laravel Reverb.
  • Exposure to deploying on DigitalOcean or similar cloud platforms.
